The deliberate distortion of Gurage history by the current Ethiopian ruling party, the Prosperity Party, and other adversaries has highlighted the urgent need for our Gurage community to take action. It is essential to publish and republish books that accurately tell our true history. Fortunately, we have valuable research-based books like “Gogot” written by several authors and “The Gurage and Their Culture” by Gabreyesus Hailemariam, which can help preserve and share our rich history and culture. Making these books widely available is crucial to ensure that the genuine history of the Gurage people is properly represented and appreciated.

However, these important books are becoming increasingly hard to find in the market, quickly selling out and only available through individual sellers. This scarcity makes it essential to find ways to republish these books and make them accessible to everyone, ensuring that the true Gurage history is accurately told.

A significant step in this direction is the recent launch of the second edition of “አዝማች: የጉራጌ ሕዝብ አጭር ታሪክ” (Azmach: A Concise History of the Gurage People) written by Seifu Dbabe. The book launching event was attended by respected scholars, authors, and members of the Gurage community. Dr. Girma Negash, head of Addis Ababa University’s History Department, accomplished author Zenebe Wela, Nebiy Mekonen, and Mohammed Abrar, the president of the GOGOT party, were among the notable figures present. The event was filled with warmth and enthusiasm as everyone engaged in discussions and celebrations. The panelists emphasized the importance of preserving Gurage history and culture and stressed that this responsibility belongs to all members of the community.

The book, first published in 1966, will contribute to supporting the Wadye School in Ezha (ኧዣ) district of Gurage Region. This initiative not only brings Gurage history to the forefront but also contributes to education within the community.

The book launching event was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and united in their commitment to cherish and promote their cultural heritage. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in the journey of the book, as it embarked on its mission to enlighten and captivate readers, celebrating the essence of the Gurage community.

Events like this and the ongoing efforts to publish and re-publish Gurage historical and cultural books are crucial in countering false narratives spread by the Prosperity Party and other adversaries. It is essential to protect and preserve our culture for the sake of current and future generations.
