In a bold move aimed at advancing regional interests, the Gogot Party has formally submitted a petition to the Ethiopian House of Federation, urging an immediate and constitutionally sound response to the request for regional organization of the Gurage Zone. The petition, comprising four comprehensive pages, was personally presented by Gogot Party leaders on August 9, 2023.
The petition underscores a paramount concern — the perceived lack of a constitutionally aligned response to the request for the formation of the Gurage National Regional State. The Gogot Party’s petition emphasizes the pivotal role of the House of Federation as the guardian of the Ethiopian constitution. The party advocates for a steadfast commitment to respecting and enforcing constitutional principles, thereby ensuring the protection of the rights and aspirations of the Gurage people.
The timing of the petition’s submission carries historical significance, aligning with the annual observance of August 11, also known as ነሀሴ 5 within the Gurage community. Last year, on August 11 or ነሀሴ 5, the Gurage Council notably rejected the proposal for forming a cluster regional state by a majority vote (52 to 40). This context underscores the complex and evolving dynamics surrounding the Gurage region’s pursuit of regionalization.
In a clear indication of their dedication, the leaders of the Gogot Party personally presented their meticulously crafted four-page petition before the House of Federation. The party left no room for ambiguity about its intent, emphasizing its readiness to pursue peaceful and lawful avenues in defense of the rights of the Gurage people.
